2004 HS Championship: Open Division – Saturday 22 May

by Jones Oliver

By the close of Saturday, the open division saw little shakeup in the pre-tournament seeds for each pool, but it did see 28 games of top-notch disc.

Some brief highlights:

In the first round of games, Northfield Mt. Hermon won in cap over Nashville 11-9. On field #2, it was Wissahickon over Columbia in cap at 9-7.

Skipping to round three, the Northfield Mt. Hermon vs. South Eugene game would determine the top seed in the pool. Northfield Mt. Hermon had an early lead on South Eugene at 7-3 and sprinted ahead 10-4. Soft cap came at 11-8. Soon thereafter, South Eugene tied the game at 11. With continued gritty play, South found a 12-11 lead and then missed the downwind point as Northfield tied the game at 12-12 with the upwind score. After the pull, Northfield forced a turnover and called for timeout. Northfield stacked into the end zone and with a break-force throw, clinched the game, 13-12.

Also, in the late rounds of pool play, in cap, Nathan Hale over Alameda, 11-10, Beacon over Memorial, 11-8, and Nashville over St. John’s Ravenscourt, 12-10.

Pre-quarterfinals, after pool play, had cross-over games for the second and third seeded teams in each pool. In cap, Nashville (D3) moved onto quarterfinals over Madison West (A2), 10-9. Wissahickon (B2) moved on after playing Nathan Hale (C3), 15-5. Memorial (C2), in cap, prevailed over Columbia (B3), 13-8 and South Eugene (D2) over Yale (A3), 15-7.

Pool B was the only group to shake it by having Northwest School (3-0) lead the pack with Wissahickon (2-1), Columbia (1-2), and Cretin-Durham Hall (0-3) following.

Pool C completed the first three games ranked Beacon (3-0), Memorial (2-1), Nathan Hale (1-2), and Alameda (0-3).

Pool D was tightly contested, but settled in with Northfield Mt. Hermon (3-0) finishing at the top with South Eugene (2-1), Nashville (1-2), and St. John’s Ravenscourt (0-3) not far behind.
