2008-2012 UPA Strategic Plan

Strategy: Improve Player Knowledge of the Rules of Ultimate so that SOTG and Self-officiated Play can Thrive at all Levels

The UPA Assessment revealed that SOTG and self-officiated play are “essential” to Ultimate for a majority of players. One of the defining characteristics of SOTG is knowledge of and adherence to the rules of the game, and self-officiated play is only possible if players know the rules that they are charged with upholding. Respondents also indicated that they were most likely to obtain their rules information from a teammate or other player. In order to promote the highest quality of play, uphold SOTG and preserve the self-officiated nature of the sport, the UPA must work to increase rules knowledge among players.

Tactic:  Expand variety and quality of rules accessibility resources. The UPA will produce and maintain a variety of online rules resources: FAQs, quizzes, annotated rules, abbreviated rules, video enactments.

Tactic: Implement rules knowledge requirement for certain teams and individuals. A rules quiz will be developed for coaching certification and Series participation (one player per team).

Tactic: Investigate feasibility of instituting incentive system for players to learn the rules. If feasible, system will be implemented in conjunction with passing rules-focused quizzes.
