Name/Logo Guidelines FAQ

Name/Logo Guidelines:
Frequently Asked Questions

Why would the UPA be concerned about names and logos?

One of the primary missions of the organization is to promote the sport. Fellow players, the media, parents, and athletic administrators are just some of the groups whose positive perception of the sport is important towards promoting Ultimate in its best light. Limitations on names are not meant to infringe on the freedom of teams or players to be funny or creative in choosing team names or nicknames. However, some names, while creative and/or funny to some, may detract from or overshadow the spirit and athleticism of the sport. Some names and logos are simply not acceptable for use by various forms of media or other partner organizations.

What events or programs will the UPA monitor?

UPA personnel may monitor any program. However, more attention will be paid to those programs or events that receive attention from outside groups, serve youth players, or are focused on introducing the sport to new players. The context of a specific situation will be taken into account when making these determinations.

What kind of names might need to be altered or changed?

Names that are overtly sexual, derogatory, or contain profanity are the kind of names that risk being questioned and potentially changed. The context of the specific situations will be taken into account when making these determinations.
