Finals: Fury strikes first, working it down the field through Riot's zone. Fury starts the next point with a zone of their own, and Vivian Zayas (#5) throws a long swing that bounces off the hands of #20 Kari Deleeuw. Liz Penny (#14) gets it back immediately on D. Riot has lots of passes against zone but not much upfield movement. They attempt a long one, but it's macked along the way. Then #5 Gwen Ambler is D'd by Deleeuw. There's a couple of swing passes in the back of the zone, and then Deb Cussen (#27) throws a long bomb to #6 Kati Holmos. It's a gorgeous lay right outside the endzone. Holmos throws the score to Deleeuw, tie game.
On the ensuing possession, Fury's Jody Dozono (#24) throws a nice break to Jennifer Donnelly (#00). Fury turns it in the redzone. Riot is still not moving well against zone. #9 Amy Little makes a layout bid D and doesn't hit it, but the receiver drops. She's then thrown to for the easy score.
Riot has more trouble against the zone on the next point. Cussen throws a high backhand away. Donnelly has a nice break to #17 Nicole Beck, who then turfs it. On Riot, #2 Kim Blakemore throws a high flick against the zone that's D'd. Donnelly picks up and throws, and it's dropped by #11 Julie Baker. But Riot still can't move the disc upfield against the zone. Cussen throws a zinger through the middle that's dropped by #9 Vida Towne. Fury throws a swilly flick that the intended receiver misses, but #3 Kirsten Unfried has the backup. Fury 3, Riot 1.
Riot again turns it over against the zone. Holmos has a layout D on Unfried, but then Fury sets the zone again. Deleeuw drops a swing about 15 yards out from her own endzone. On Fury, it's Beck to #18 Samatha Salvia to Unfried for the goal.
Riot's Zayas throws a long one to Jane Meseck (#4). Riot utilizes lots of high backhands against the cup. The wind is not too high, but Riot can't seem to move it downfield. Zayas throws a pass right to the defender, #15 Martita Emde. Ambler moves it upfield to #21 Erin Percival. There's a long bomb to #20 Kimber Zabora, and it's 5-1 Fury.
Against the zone, Riot throws many passes but can't make anything happen. On Fury, #27 Bryn Martyna plays great cup defense and causes a Blakemore drop. Fury throws a hammer to Stacey Schoemehl (#22) for the score.
Riot continues their problems against the zone. Fury gets the turn and throws 5 break swing throws to make it 7-1 Fury.
Riot has a turn against the zone but Kristen Daily (#33) gets it back on D. She is thrown to long and Fury sets up the Z downfield. Riot is able to work it in from about 30 yards.
Riot brings a zone of their own on defense, and Fury is unable to get it beyond their own goalline. The cup has the D, and Riot makes the easy score.
Fury works it downfield and turns it, but Schoemehl gets it back for them with a poach D in the zone. She then catches the score, making it 8-3 Fury.
Riot turns it again and brings a hard D. Fury has some nice breaks but they're not getting the looks they want. Some high swilly throws are D'd. Both teams have multiple turnovers on this point. Finally Cussen breaks it open with a long throw on the sideline to Vida Towne. She dumps to Blakemore, who puts up a swilly forehand to #23 Leah Towne, who lays out to make the tough grab..
On a bad pull by Riot, Fury is close to the endzone. Riot's Penny gets a face block and #37 Liz Duffy finishes the D. Leah Towne breaks open the zone with a nice catch and throw to the wing. #14 Robin Knowler has a good mark in the zone, and after some passes, the cup D's a Zayas throw. Fury goes long to Knowler for field position; it's a turn but they get it back on a controversial up-down call. Knowler then hammers to Percival to take half for Fury 9-4.
Riot comes out of halftime with a decision to play the field position game. The first point after half is full of incomplete hucks. Cussen is big for Riot, coming down with a lot of defenses. There is also a crowd-pleasing layout bid by Vida Towne that falls incomplete. Eventually Fury gets the disc around midfield and starts moving it well. Ambler throws a difficult one to Schoemehl, who makes the layout grab. These two work it up the field, then Ambler throws a swilly backhand that is caught by #19 Jennifer Beck.
The next pull is deep in Riot's endzone. The huck by Deleeuw to gain field position goes out of bounds early, and it's an easy throw over the cup from Donnelly to Knowler.
It's a turnover fest once more, with hucks back and forth by both teams. Riot players lay out a lot but the discs are too far away. Fury's Little makes a great high layout D against Holmos close to Fury's endzone. Several turnovers later, Fury gets the disc in the redzone. It's a succession of quick passes, Emde to Little to Percival to #8 Alicia Barr with a nice snag for the score.
Fury is up 12-4. They get a D in the cup on a high backhand and are 10 yards out of the endzone. Emde throws to Schoemehl, who lays out for the goal.
The next point is another mess of turnovers. Once again, Riot eventually gives Fury the disc around midfield and Fury throws lots of swings for the score.
On the ensuing possession, Cussen hucks it away and Fury has some long passes and calls the timeout. After the break, it's a hammer to Ambler, 15-4.
Next possession, same story. Riot gives the disc away. Fury moves quickly and easily against the zone and zips it in.
And on game point, there won't be a huge comeback. The two teams repeat the last point, with Riot hucking it to a midfield turnover and Fury scoring smoothly.
Fury was dominant the entire tournament, beating the defending champs and never playing a close game. Their zone was unstoppable and the field position game worked well. The San Francisco team won in 1999 and is the only recent history champion besides Godiva. Could this be the beginning of a new dynasty?
