Team History:
Although New Jersey has served as an important setting in
the history of ultimate, its contribution to the national
club scene was long hindered by the lack of a true urban
center. After years of fielding hungry teams but failing
to advance beyond Regionals, a core group of players from
Havoc (NJ) combined with Black & Gold (Pittsburgh, PA)
in 2000, seeking to forge an elite team. Despite falling
short of Nationals, the team’s performance yielded
promising signs of things to come. Re-named Pike in 2001,
the team retained a core group of Pittsburgh players but
reverted to a largely NJ-based roster. Its 4th-place finish
at Regionals was a new high-water mark for this generation
of players. In 2002, Pike welcomed a group of talented players
from Philadelphia along with several Jersey boys returning
to their roots. This team took another step forward by securing
the third Mid-Atlantic bid to Nationals, bridging a 20-year
gap with the NJ teams that competed for titles in the early
1980’s. Entering as the 15th seed in its first Nationals
appearance, Pike stormed its way to a 10th place finish.
After an off-season marked by numerous retirements and relocations,
Pike reloaded for 2003 by infusing the roster with considerable
new talent from NJ and its metropolitan neighbors to the
north (NYC) and south (Philly). After winning Henlopen and
Choptank, the team took 2nd place in the Mid-Atlantic region
this fall, and arrives in Sarasota hungrier than ever for
victory.
